Review: 2011 Hyundai Equus Ultimate
Filed under: Sedan, Hyundai, Reviews, Luxury
Lexus Luxury At A Hyundai Price
My roommate - bless her heart - is about as much of a car enthusiast as the BMW X6 is a coupe. She puts forth an honest effort to hold conversations with me about autos, but 90 percent of the time, it just doesn't work. You have to understand, in her eyes, a Cadillac Escalade is the pinnacle of luxury, the fastest car in the world has to be a Ferrari and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is fitted with "those squeezy seats." She's still amazed by the power of Bluetooth and always gets wide-eyed whenever I plunk a car into Reverse and a rear-view camera comes on.
That in mind, it will come as no surprise to learn that when the 2011 Hyundai Equus Ultimate arrived at my door, she beckoned from the other room, "Hey, I think your Lexus just showed up."
It's like she had already drank the proverbial Kool-Aid. Hyundai wants everyone to believe that its new luxury flagship is capable of doing everything that a Lexus LS does, but at a much lower price. And while there are a few swing-and-miss things to note about the Equus experience, what Hyundai has done here is create a truly bona-fide luxury car capable of standing toe-to-toe with its Japanese competition and coming pretty darn close to the likes of its lofty German rivals.
But will we simply boast that the Equus - Hyundai's most expensive car to date - is a good value, or does it possess enough content and engineering prowess to truly stand out amongst its highly regarded classmates? Follow the jump to find out.

1972 Honda Z600 - Old-School Soul

Resurrecting A Piece Of Honda History
Tran Nguyen's '72 Honda Z600
If you're an avid reader of Honda Tuning, or spend any amount of time on the automotive forums, you've no doubt seen the term "old-school" used to describe everything from mid-90s wheels to aero kits, and even an older chassis. With 20 years now firmly planted under its belt, the '88-91 chassis has, in many enthusiasts' eyes, earned the right to bask in the beloved glow of "old-school cool." What many don't know, or perhaps they've conveniently forgotten, is that there was in fact life prior to the early 90s, beyond the cult classic EF chassis. In 1970, after having found great success in the sale of their motorcycles on U.S. soil, Honda Motor Co. introduced their first automotive offering: the N600. Based on a two-cylinder, front-wheel drive, gas miser, the sedan seemed almost comical in comparison to the mammoth competitors of that era. Plagued by a crushing gas crisis, the tiny Hondas began to prosper by building on a reputation for their uncanny ability to avoid the dreaded gas pump. Just a few years later, Honda showed a change in direction as a much bolder z600 coupe was unveiled to the American public. For a brand-new automotive supplier in a foreign land, the "z" could only be described as a smashing success. The first-generation Civic would later be introduced, ending the reign of the little z600, but not before over 40,000 Americans had gladly handed over their hard-earned dollars for a "z" of their own.

'92-'95 Honda Civics - The Legacy Of The '92-'95 Honda Civic

A look at the most iconic years in the Civic's 40-year lifespan.
Exactly 20 years after Long Beach, California, longshoremen took delivery of the very first, North-American-bound Honda Civics, with little fanfare, the once Japanese motorcycle company released what is arguably the most iconic of the subcompact's near 40-year lifespan. Its fifth-generation adaptation, manufactured and sold during the brand's '92-'95 model years, Honda's coupe, hatchback, and sedan trio, arguably helped peak and later carry Honda performance on its shoulders. The then-revolutionary, all-new unibody with its rounded, egg-shaped lines and timeless looks remains beloved by true Hondaphiles, even today.

Shayton Equilibrium: Would-be supercar one part Ferrari, one part Lotus
Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, Performance, Europe, Design/Style, MISC

The Shayton Equilibrium looks like it could be a whole barrel of fun. Or rather, it might be - if only it existed. For now, the Shayton remains a digital rendering only, but the Slovenian company is apparently toiling away at making the design a reality.
The Shayton packs a 1,000-plus-horsepower V12 amidships, and, Shayton says it will nail down 62 mph in just 2.9 seconds, on the way to topping out at 248 mph. Couple that with carbon fiber bodywork equaling just 2,600 pounds, and you have a true hypercar recipe.
The design is a little bit Ferrari Enzo, a little bit Lotus Esprit, and maybe even a little Marussia B2, but looks to spank all three of them on a track. To do that, the 20 or so Shayton plans to build will need to exist, and so far there's no notion of when that might be.

2007 Lincoln MKZ

Lincoln's MKZ (formerly known as the Zephyr,) shares nearly every component with the Ford Fusion, including high hopes for brand rejuvenation. Lincoln is in need of a fresh and proper flagship to accompany the aging Town Car and LS. However, it's questionable whether or not new and younger customers will flock to Lincoln/Mercury dealers for the smallish front-wheel-drive MKZ, especially with the lower-priced Fusion joining the plethora of solid import and domestic competitors.

Big SoCalEuro Gathering 2008- Teutonic Tailgating

It's not all about racing, these Euro enthusiasts just want to drive and enjoy their cars
Generally when you look down into the packed parking lot of Qualcom field you see acres of lifted trucks with trailer hitch mounted bar-b-ques and beds full of ice cradling kegs of the finest cheap domestic beer money can buy if it's on sale. Armies of blue painted bare-chested men burrow between the trucks like NFL liveried ants in elementary school science project. Today however, the home of The San Diego Chargers is over run with European Car Fanatics all brought together by socaleuro.com.

Soleil Anadi coachbuilt Corvette headed for Top Marques Monaco
Filed under: Concept Cars, Coupe, Performance, Chevrolet, Misc. Auto Shows

There's a grand old tradition of Italian coachbuilders rebodying Corvettes that stretches back for decades. And thankfully that tradition has been revived of late, giving us such radical creations as the Bertone Mantide and the Spada Codatronca. And now we can add one more to the mix.
Just shy of two years ago we brought you news of Ugur Sahin's Corvette Z03 design being put into production with input from a Corvette tuning house called Mallett Cars. Now it appears the final version, with some substantial tweaks to the styling, will be unveiled next month at the exclusive Top Marques show in Monaco.
Now carrying the nameplate Anadi and built under the Soleil Motors banner, the shape has apparently undergone some adjustments but is still recognizable as the same design. The see-through hood window, for example, is gone, as is the kink in the grille's lower lip, while the rear end features a more contemporary shape than the Daytona-like surface of the original design.
Overall, the Anadi still looks distinctly Sahin, and arguably more Corvette-like. But we'll have to wait another few weeks to see all the angles. In the meantime you can scroll through the few images available in the gallery below, the earlier design renderings in the one below that, and an earlier interpretation in the gallery after the break.

Spada to unveil track-focused Codatronca Monza roadster in Monaco?
Filed under: Concept Cars, Convertible, Performance, Europe, Misc. Auto Shows

You may remember the Spada Codatronca from a few years back. The controversially-styled (see below for high-res image gallery) coachbuilt Corvette was unveiled in 2008 at the Top Marques show in Monaco, bearing radical bodywork penned by former Zagato designer Ercole Spada and his son Paolo. Now the company is coming back to the exclusive Monte Carlo exposition with a new version.
All we know from the Top Marques Monaco website is that Spada is planning an even more extreme, track-focused version of the Codatronca. Which is no mean feat, since the supercar already packs a twin-supercharged 7.0-liter LS7 V8 with 600 or 700 horsepower, depending on specification. But word has it that the track monster - called "Monza" after the famous Italian racetrack - will also feature an open interpretation of the design, backed up by the fuzzy rendering above circulating the interwebs.
We'll have to sit tight and wait to see what comes of this, but between this and the Soleil Anadi (stay tuned for more on that), this year's Top Marques show is looking good for Italian coachbuilt Corvettes.

First Drive: 2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302

America's Answer To The BMW M3
The Trans-Am series of the late 1960s and early 1970s could be considered the golden era of American motorsports. Not only did it showcase the most desirable American cars of the time, but it featured some of the world's greatest racing drivers engaging in this country's own brand of fender-banging racing.
It's why Ford is so proud of the Boss 302, winner of the 1970 Trans-Am season with legendary driver Parnelli Jones behind the wheel, and why the street car has become a legend. But ask Jim Farley, Ford's head honcho of marketing, about the 2012 Mustang Boss 302, and he'll tell you that it's not just about building a remake of the original. "This is not a nostalgia project," he told us. "This is not in any way trying to bring back the Boss. This project is so much more than that. If we wanted to do that we could take a 5.0-liter, put some stripes and spoilers and other upgrades on it and that would be it. It was not a means to an end. The Boss 302 was originally a means to an end. It was a production car to go racing. This is a completely different project. We were not going to do this project unless we could beat an M3 at this track." This track being the famed Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
With Bavaria's best sportscar in it sights, did Ford achieve its goal of building a modern day legend, or is the 2012 Boss 302 simply another one of the infinite variations of the Ford Mustang? Ford invited us out to Monterey for a full day with the car, including some track time at Laguna Seca, and we have the answer.

Chrysler recalls nearly 250,000 minivans and crossovers over ignition key woes
Filed under: Minivan/Van, Government/Legal, Recalls, Safety, Crossover, Chrysler, Dodge

Chrysler and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration have announced that the Auburn Hills automaker is recalling 248,437 vehicles due to potentially faulty ignition systems. According to the company, certain 2010 Chrysler Town and Country, Dodge Grand Caravan and Dodge Journey vehicles were built with ignitions that could accidently switch from the "run" position to "accessory," thereby causing the engine to shut off. Both the company and NHTSA are concerned that the issue could cause an accident. As such, Chrysler will replace the ignition modules free of charge beginning in April of this year.
The recall includes vehicles manufactured between August 3, 2009 and June 17, 2010, and owners can contact Chrysler for more information. Click past the jump for the full recall notice.
