At $47,010 (including destination), the 2012 BMW 1 Series M Coupe isn't exactly cheap. Still, Matthew Russell, BMW product and technology PR rep, says it's "the most affordable M BMW has ever sold, adjusting for inflation, including the original E30 M3." That car cost around $34,000 when it was introduced in 1988. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Russell is more than right: $34,000 in 1988 had the same buying power as $62,885 in 2010.

With rumors of BMW getting into front-wheel-drive cars, we asked Dr. Kay Segler, president of BMW M GmbH, if M could do a FWD car. Segler said, "I haven't thought about that," and went on to remark that he couldn't see doing a sub-1-Series M car. Russell elaborated with, "There are rumors about what is coming, but those aren't from us." As to other rumors about whether the coupes will be limited or capped in number, we were told categorically, "No." But that was amended with, "But they will be hard to get."

Nameplates like Charger and Hemi might be commonly associated with the Dodge brand, but like any household name, it had to start somewhere. And that somewhere was with the concept you see here.

Made to showcase the then-new 7.0-liter Hemi V8, the 1964 Dodge Hemi Charger concept car is one of the most coveted pieces from Dodge's history. It packs one of the 15 original race Hemis built, mated to a three-speed automatic. The fully restored, extreme bodywork puts it on the map, but the reported output of over 600 horsepower (kept in check by hydraulic drum brakes) promises to rip it right up.

The last time this vehicle changed hands in 2007 it went for a reported $1.1 million. Now it's destined for the gavel once again as RM Auctions takes it to the Arizona Biltmore on January 20. Thanks for the tip, Arthur!

Ford nearly overtakes Toyota in Consumer Reports Brand Perception Survey

Consumer Reports has just released its latest brand perception study, and for the first time, Ford seems to be giving Toyota a run for its money. According to CR, the two brands are nearly tied up, though Ford has edged ahead in categories like safety, quality and value. The Blue Oval has been gaining serious ground recently - jumping 35 percentage points in the study in just two years. Meanwhile, Toyota has seen its score fall by 45 percentage points in the same period of time.

The study measures each brand across a handful of categories, including safety, quality, value, performance, design/style, technology/innovation and environmentally friendly/green. Scores are then averaged to generate a total brand perception. Consumer Reports notes that Toyota still leads the green category by leaps and bounds with a score of 46, though interestingly, it notes that buyers seem to be less and less concerned with just how environmentally friendly their vehicles are. Ford, meanwhile holds onto just 18 percentage points in the same category. Hit the jump for the full press blast.

There just aren’t enough Maserati models in the world. But here is one more at least. It’s the 2011 GranTurismo MC Stradale. This model ups the ante set by the usual GranTurismo coupe by boosting horsepower from 430 to 450. Some weight has been trimmed, so that makes the suspension revisions even more welcome. Maserati describes the handling as razor sharp. There have also been some aero tweaks that increase downforce without adding drag. One more reason to take it seriously: The MC Stradale comes as a coupe only.

Thanks to a more liberal use of carbon fiber, the GT weighs 3,362. With 560 hp from its 5.2-liter engine, that's a power-to-weight ratio of six pounds per pony.

And so the time-honored tradition of paying more for less continues. The Audi R8 GT sits at the very top of the marque's supercar range. The usual R8 with a V10 weighs around 3,600 pounds. Thanks to a more liberal use of carbon fiber, the GT weighs 3,362. With 560 hp from its 5.2-liter engine, that's a power-to-weight ratio of six pounds per pony. So the sprint from standstill to 60 mph is over in only 3.6 seconds and top speed is 198.84 mph. Audi has just told us how much a GT will cost: $198,000. Just to add to the pain, only 333 examples will be built, with about 100 or so headed Stateside.

A scant 30 minutes had passed after taking possession of this 2010 Ford F-150 SVT Raptor until we had all four of its wheels off the ground. We'd have done the deed even sooner, but our destination - a Baja-style test track in the middle of the desert outside Phoenix, Arizona - was, understandably, far enough out of town that no locals would be able to complain of excessive noise or mini dust tornadoes encroaching on their own tracts of brush-filled paradise.

After all, the modern conveniences of day-to-day life just don't mix with such uncivilized activities as seeing how much air you can put between your truck's skid plates and solid ground.

And therein lies the beauty of this particular beast. Since when did such niceties as in-dash navigation with voice-activated SYNC, a leather interior with heated seats, dual-zone climate control and satellite radio count as standard equipment in a truck that was built primarily for 100-mile-per-hour blasts through the desert?

Since late 2009, actually, when FoMoCo unleashed the first version of the F-150 SVT Raptor on an unsuspecting public. Unlike all previous products from Ford's Specialty Vehicle Team, including the F-150-based SVT Lightning, this truck does its best work once the pavement ends and the really nasty stuff begins.

It's no secret that we've loved the Raptor ever since our first experience behind the wheel, and now it's better than ever before. How so? Keep reading to find out.

The new car, introduced on a live internet video feed on April 6, looks very similar to the outgoing model. It maintains the circle and dome motifs that made the little coupe famous, but proportion changes make the car look lower, sleeker, and more aggressive. The same is true of the interior, which, while completely redesigned, looks like a smoothed over version of the last edition.

Porsche unveiled the 918 RSR hybrid race car, which boasts peak performance of 767 horsepower at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The 918 RSR is an evolution of the 911 GT3 R and the 918 Spyder hybrid concepts last year. The 918 RSR is powered by the 563 hp. V-8 from the RS Spyder racer and has electric motor on each of the front wheels that provide 75 kilowatts each for a total net horsepower of 767 at peak. Regenerative braking creates the electric power, which is stored with a flywheel.

2010-2011 Saab 9-3 faces recall over possible fuel pump defect

Saab has announced that it is recalling around 4,400 9-3 models for defective fuel pumps. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration says that the vehicles made have been built with pumps that did not meet the correct specifications, and as a result, the pumps may seize, causing the engine to stall. NHTSA believes that the defect could potentially increase the risk of an accident. As far as we know, no incidents have been reported as a result of the issue.

Saab will replace the fuel pumps free of charge, and the campaign is expected to get under way on or around February 18. Owners may contact Saab directly at 1.800.955.9007 or visit the NHTSA site for more information on the recall. Hit the jump for a look at both notices.

Saab has some interesting news, like a fleet of electric 9-3 sedans testing future EV hardware and a four-cylinder turbo for the new 9-5 that can run on 85 percent ethanol. But the most intriguing development in the marque’s recent history is the announcement that BMW will be supplying engines for an all-new smaller model, the Saab 9-2, built on the same platform as the MINI Countryman crossover thing. The engine will be the same 1.6-liter turbocharged four-potter found in the current MINI range.

The Audi Ur-Quattro sends shivers down our spines.

After 30 years, the Audi Ur-Quattro still sends a shiver down the spine. So even though this is just a show car made for the 2010 Paris bash, it’s still easy to get a little giggly about it. The Quattro concept is based on the gloriously stonking RS 5, but with a shorter wheelbase and a lower roofline. The body is fashioned mainly from aluminum with a smattering of carbon fiber. And like the car to which it pays homage, there’s a turbocharged five-cylinder engine up front making 408 hp. A six-speed manual transmission sends that power to all four wheels. Audi says the car represents the systematic further development of a production coupe using high-performance technology. If this thing ever gets made, everyone else can go home.

No longer known as the Aviator, this Mazda 6 based Lincoln is now called the MKX. Read about it here.

Lincoln is hoping that, together with the new Zephyr sedan, the MKX will entice younger and hipper buyers into its showrooms, which have been lacking anything youthful or stylish for quite some time. Based on Mazda 6 architecture, the MKX uses the same 3.5 V-6 and front- or all-wheel drive components as the similar Ford Edge, but offers swiveling headlights and other luxuries not available on the Ford. When it goes on sale in the fall of 2006, this handsome crossover will be the first production model to follow Lincoln's new naming convention, which ditches familiar names like Aviator and Continental in favor of generic letter combinations. Hey, didn't every other luxury brand start doing that last decade?

Everyone loves a concept or three. Especially when they look like the Jaguar C-X75. The story behind it is to celebrate 75 years of heritage that takes in C and D Types, although it does look spookily like the XJ220 from the early 1990s, which was a bit of disaster for the company. One more nugget of info: This one doesn’t have a normal car engine. Instead, it has an electric/gas turbine. Its lithium-ion battery pack takes six hours to recharge and then propels this all-wheel-drive car to 205 mphtorque is a ridiculous 1,150 lb-ftor a range of more than 500 miles. There are no plans for production, but stranger things have happened, although we can’t think of one at the moment.

But Saturn is now ready to win back a customer base with wonderfully Opel-like cars such as the Sky sports car and this beautiful sedan called the Aura. Saturn general manager Jill Lajdziak calls this a "sneak peek at a new generation of emotionally compelling Saturn vehicles," and we hope that claim turns out to be true.

Report: Toyota recalls fuel massive spike in complaints to NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration got a wee bit busier this year. As of December 14th, the agency reported that it had received over 64,000 complaints. Edmunds' calculations, which remove duplicates, pegs the figure at more than 40,000 complaints - thanks in no small part to the spate of massive recalls from Toyota.

In fact, NHTSA reports that it received 87 complaints for every 100,000 vehicles sold by Toyota in 2010, more than double the Japanese automaker's performance from the previous year and the highest percentage of any company selling cars in the United States.

Not that other automakers fared that much better. Nissan came in with the second highest ratio at 62 complaints per 100,000 vehicles and Volkswagen nabbed third place with 58. The industry average of 47 complaints per 100,000 vehicles was up from fewer than 30 in 2009. For what it's worth, Ford and Honda had the lowest ratios of complaints, and there was little difference between American and Japanese manufacturers.

These complaints are a good thing, says NHTSA, as the agency can then determine if a customer's problem is singular or part of a larger issue that affects multiple vehicles, possibly prompting an inspection or safety recall. So don't quit yer' complaining!
